Agape LoveĪgape love is a sacrificial love that unites and heals. This differentiation can be helpful for us to think about what love means, especially in discussing the highest form of love, agape love. Agape love is beautifully described in 1 Corinthians 13. It is the highest, most pure form of love as a choice, not out of attraction or obligation. 'Agape love” differs from other types of love in the Bible. Even though the various Greek words for love are all translated into the same English word in most instances, they held different meanings for Greek-speaking readers. However, the Greek language used in the Bible does make those distinctions. However, English doesn’t lend itself well to making these distinctions. We say, “I love chocolate” and “I love you.” Our love for a significant other, a favorite food, and a friend are all different (hopefully). ( Y) But the greatest of these is love.We often use the word love in different contexts and meanings. ( X)ġ3 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. ( W) Now I know in part then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror ( V) then we shall see face to face. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood ( U) behind me. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. 9 For we know in part ( S) and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, ( T) what is in part disappears. But where there are prophecies, ( Q) they will cease where there are tongues, ( R) they will be stilled where there is knowledge, it will pass away. ( O) 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. ( M) 6 Love does not delight in evil ( N) but rejoices with the truth.

( J) 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, ( K) it is not easily angered, ( L) it keeps no record of wrongs. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor ( G) and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, ( H) but do not have love, I gain nothing.Ĥ Love is patient, ( I) love is kind. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy ( B) and can fathom all mysteries ( C) and all knowledge, ( D) and if I have a faith ( E) that can move mountains, ( F) but do not have love, I am nothing. 13 If I speak in the tongues ( A) of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
